Cookbook and recipe

I need new inspirations for recipes! Anyone?  I'm so running out of ideas what to cook daily cos now I do the cooking for most of the meals at home. I have tons of cookbook but some of the dishes are just too much of a hassle to whip up at home. So i need practical, tasty and healthy recipes.

The good news is that my maid finally can cook simple dishes like soups and basic Chinese dishes. So sometimes when i need to catch up with some girlfrens, I can ask her to take over my duties so that my children and hubby won't starve.

Joyce, my very close buddy is going away soon as her hubby got posted to New York and it'll be quite firm unless they have different plans in the last hour. After talking to her the other day when we had tea, I suddenly have this idea when she shared her worries with me. She is worried that she cannot be a good SAHM (she manages her Dad's business currently). And her main worries will be loneliness and cooking for her son and herself.
Thus i have this thought to compile a simple list if recipe especially those 'one-pot' meals for her before she goes off. I hope it'll come in handy when you run out of ideas. I will surely miss you babe....

Wendy's Fashion Blog

Finally something fresh and unpretentious! Im so happpy to have stumbled upon Wendy's blog. She is such a charming woman and her photographer friend takes such nice shots of her.

I love the way she describe her outfits of the day and she is so willing to share her tips and finds.
Wendy can look so stylish with simple stuffs put together. No need for Chanels or Birkins (though she carried her Chanel in style too!)

I'm so tired of looking at some pretentious pose of branded bags and expensive clothings put together and some of the blogger's styles are so predicatable.
Wendy's style is what I like...very apt for our weather here and love that she is mostly in pants/ jeans (hahaha much like what I love to wear) ...casual chic I call it!
It's such a joy just looking at the tastefully taking pictures...check it out

Detox Dieting

One night I was browsing J's photo album in FB and almost choked on my drink. She was a whopping 90kg before she got married. And she managed to slim down to 56kg for her wedding! Kudos to her for being able to achieve that. But during pregnancy, she put on another 27kg and still wasn't looking good after 6mths of delivery. That was around 85kg and the J now is around 68kg.
After chatting with her the other day, I got to know that that she signed for a slimming proogramme with a slimming centre before her wedding. But it was too much work and money and her weight yoyo-ed once she stopped the programme.
It was after an advice from a friend that she went through the detox dieting programme that made her lose 10kg within a month. She is currently taking a break from it and will continue again soon to finally achieve her ideal pre-preg weight.

And so i was curious and I probed more into what this detox programme was about. I actually like the fact that this programme not only help to shed some weight but also to improve the complexion and overall well-being.- which, I need badly! Morever I was just looking at shedding a few kgs to look better in dresses ..hahaha. (Yeah too bad I m not blessed with good genes that I put on weight even when I have already stopped taking dinner and cut back on starch! It's so unfair!)

So, I was very keen to try it out but the determination has to play a big part here. I'm a food lover, this would mean a torture to me . The main diet of this programme is mainly fruit juices and fluids. It's just like starting all over as a baby . It involves a week of just juices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.(no kidding!)  Then followed by introducing healthy soup to replace the juices for the 2nd and 3rd week and slowly moving onto solids like tofu and greens.Base on her advise, I should be able to achieve my desired weight in less than a month's time.
Hmmm...we shall see....I have not really embarked on this plan...let me get my mental adjusted first by starting with replacing a few meals with the juices cos'I know good food has always been my weakness, hence Im not going to be too hard on myself....but I really really salute to J's determination.

Bushed!!

Phew! Finally it's coming to the end of the school holidays! Although Favian isn't really a bother and quite independent, but it's tiring when a kiddo is at home 24/7.
Luckily Mischa's childcare routine is not affected even during the school holidays otherwise i would have gone mad.

Thank goodness Favian is recovering well from his surgery and so far everything seems fine. Tomorrow will be his follow-up checkup.Hope to hear good reviews from the doc.

The helper has been good so far. though a little slow and with less intiative compared to my previous one, I think she will be able to catch up pretty fast.
As far as co-sleeping goes, Mischa has been good too, sleeping with Favian and the helper. So far so good and we fnally can have the entire King size bed all to ourselves! I realised I sleep better at night too as no one is kicking me all over the place at night!

Let's hope things get better....

Tweets that touched my heart...I LOVE JAPAN!

 A friend on FB shared this extract from Tweeter. I was reading this when i needed to cool down after the argument with hubby. These brought tears to my eyes (i was really weeping) and my earlier ranting was not significant at all compared to the tragedy in Japan now. As devastating as it is, I still try to catch the newstime for updated reports on Japan's situation. I take the opportunity to educate my kiddos though they find it 'boring' that the news kept on repeating about the Earthquake and Tsunami.
We are really a lucky bunch here. But that's life isn't it? We always envy other countries for having thr 4 seasons, cheaper luxury items and cities/ places they can explore in within their own country. But God is really fair, you get some you lose some.
Not that I'm very pleased with the current policies of our nation, but I count my blessings to be born in this country though I will really hope to move if there is chance :P

Back to these long list of Tweets :
http://www.facebook.com/notes/jun-shiomitsu/japan-quake-as-seen-from-twitter-translated-by-me-so-quality-questionable/10150121176733830

Very very touching 'voices' of the people....It reminds me of the warmth I felt when we were touring in Japan in 2008. Everywhere we go, the Japanese are so polite, well-mannered and service-orientated. This has to be in their culture all along...and during bad times like this, you can truly see...I love Japan...I will go back again someday..I will.

This is what I am today

I can feel the throat infection coming...
 And my new helper just came today, tons to tell her. can you imagine an entire month of mess in the house? Oh another mission I hope to succeed...tonight is the 1st time Mischa's sleeping with the new helper. I hope she can bond with Mischa more so that I can sneek out once a while for some late night movies or catch up with my girl friends.
Let's hope they both like one another.
Just downed some beer (hoping to 'cool' my body and soothe the throat) and feel like sleeping now....

The power of an Earthquake

JAPAN -- The massive earthquake that struck northeast Japan last March 11 has shortened the length Earth's day by a fraction and shifted how the planet's mass is distributed.
A new analysis of the 8.9-9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan has found that the intense temblor has accelerated Earth's spin, shortening the length of the 24-hour day by 1.8 microseconds, according to geophysicist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
Gross refined his estimates of the Japan quake's impact - which previously suggested a 1.6-microsecond shortening of the day - based on new data on how much the fault that triggered the earthquake slipped to redistribute the planet's mass. A microsecond is a millionth of a second.
"By changing the distribution of the Earth's mass, the Japanese earthquake should have caused the
Earth to rotate a bit faster, shortening the length of the day by about 1.8 microseconds," Gross told SPACE.com in an e-mail. More refinements are possible as new information on the earthquake comes to light, he added.
The scenario is similar to that of a figure skater drawing her arms inward during a spin to turn faster on the ice. The closer the mass shift during an earthquake is to the equator, the more it will speed up the spinning Earth.
One Earth day is about 24 hours, or 86,400 seconds, long. Over the course of a year, its length varies by about one millisecond, or 1,000 microseconds, due to seasonal variations in the planet's mass distribution such as the seasonal shift of the jet stream.
The initial data suggests Friday's earthquake moved Japan's main island about 8 feet, according to Kenneth Hudnut of the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake also shifted Earth's figure axis by about 6 1/2 inches (17 centimeters), Gross added.
The Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis in space, which it spins around once every day at a speed of about 1,000 mph (1,604 kph). The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced and the north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters).
"This shift in the position of the figure axis will cause the Earth to wobble a bit differently as it rotates, but will not cause a shift of the Earth's axis in space - only external forces like the gravitational attraction of the sun, moon, and planets can do that," Gross said.
This isn't the first time a massive earthquake has changed the length of Earth's day. Major temblors have shortened day length in the past.
The 8.8-magnitude earthquake in Chile last year also sped up the planet's rotation and shortened the day by 1.26 microseconds. The 9.1 Sumatra earthquake in 2004 shortened the day by 6.8 microseconds.
And the impact from Japan's 8.9-magnitude temblor may not be com¬pletely over. The weaker aftershocks may contribute tiny changes to day length as well.
The March 11 quake was the largest ever recorded in Japan and is the world's fifth largest earthquake to strike since 1900, according to the USGS. It struck offshore about 231 miles (373 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo and 80 miles (130 km) east of the city of Sendai, and created a massive tsunami that has devastated Japan's northeastern coastal areas. At least 20 aftershocks registering a 6.0 magnitude or higher have followed the main temblor.
"In theory, anything that redistributes the Earth's mass will change the Earth's rotation," Gross said. "So in principle the smaller aftershocks will also have an effect on the Earth's rotation. But since the aftershocks are smaller their effect will also be smaller." (Space.com)

My heart ache upon seeing these photos of the aftermath in Japan. This is such a disturbing news and the news flash just announced that Tokyo has been hit by the earthquake again  just hours ago , this time measuring 6.0 on the R scale.
Dad and mum were suppose to leave for their much anticipated Japan tour early April. What luck! We may consider it lucky that the mishap did not take place when the folks are there..so it's still a blessing in disguise. Looks like the trip is a definate no-go for them...we will be worried sick.
Looking at the news report, there is really nothing much we can do except to keep them in our prayers regardless of religion.

Sorrows in Japan

 The earthquake hit Japan on a black Friday ... I've been catching the news for the past few days and the recent news confirmed that there is radiation leak from a nuclear plant, followed by the Tsunami days ago.
One of my regular customer was unfortunately there when the earthquake too place. It was a traumatising experience for her with her hubby and her young daughter. She was supposed to be coming back only on Tuesday, but this holiday had to end earlier than expected. Fortunately they managed to get tickets back home yesterday. Such a relief for her...

I guess one will never know how it feels to be in such a situation unless your personal experience it and I do not wish to experience this in my whole life i tell you... My heart goes out to the Japanese and people affected there. I've been to this beautiful country 2 years ago and it's really sad to see the extent of damage in the news. hope that they will stay strong and this nightmare be over soon.

as I was typing, i received this sms from a friend saying that the nuclear blast on Sunday may cause radioactive particles in the air to come down with the rain and may cause burns or even cancer....BUT some said it turned out to be hoax...hiaz...who on earth is so free and sadistic to play such a prank on others' misery?   ..... such a sad thing to happen...sigh...

Let's stand up, WOMEN!

I'm pretty disturbed by the 2 seperate conversations I had with 2 girl pals today. And particularly with one of them.
It's about the hb and the maid issues (again!)
I don't know if she reads my blog, but I'll be very truthful here cos anyway I shared with her my point of view. I hope she can see where I'm coming from and not take it as a criticism.

We women used to be very submissive in the older days...even my mum's era, woman seldom go out to work due to family commitment vs the meagre income they bring in. Take my mum for instance. She didn't receive really high education, hence she chose to be a SAHM to take care of my brother and I after she gave birth to my elder brother. And for woman in those days, they need financial security as well as family ties. We seldom hear from divorce cases before as much as these days. I guess the most obvious reason being women are more independent and will not take the shit from men anymore.

I'm not trying to say that we should walk out of the marriage whenever something crops up. BUT i stongly believe that we should stand up for ourselves, and make the relationship work 2 ways and not any other ways.

We shouldn't be tied down because of worrying about financial support. To some degree, we have to think of  our kids. However ,however ,however (really getting frustrated here! ) we must never never hang on to a relationship because we want and think that the kids will be happy too if mummy and daddy 'pretend' to be loving but in actual fact, mummy is the one constantly giving in......

I'm no expert in this marriage thingy, but having been through a rough patch myself..... i think alot of things can work out if we want to. And by walking out sometimes, it wakes the man up on their feet to start thinking. I was insecure at times cos' I have not been in touch with the working scene for sometime. I once felt being 'bullied' by my hb and felt insecure aboout the whole thing that I freaked out. I wanted out of this marriage too, but things made a turn when we trashed things out. It's a long story and i wont go into details here. I just want to tell this friend that by being the party who gives in 24/7 isn't going to work out. It's just gonna be the start of a painful long journey with a man you love, but hate alot at the same time...Do you think your kids will not feel it?

I stress again that I'm not encouraging anyone to walk out, but to trash things out and make your stand..dun just be a 'little woman' without dignity. Please don't blame me for being so blunt, but I really have no more advice for her except to make her stand up for herself. I wish you all the best ,C!

                                         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 And so, the other conversation I had was with a close pal. She is getting married and I'm indeed happy for her. I've seen her go through bad times in her past relationship and finally she found her true love. But she shared with me her problem with her husband-to-be. There is this woman in the picture who pesters her hb but her he claimed that they are just friends. I shared with her my little story too - not to trust men 100%...it' s better to be a little more reserved cos when things crop up, it'll be easier to handle than to have total faith and trust smashed right in your face. Of course she's in such a honeymoon mood to take me seriously. And her man on the other hand is accusing her of being overly-sensitive...DUH! Men...why can't they just listen to us for once!
And women...
When can we not depend on men (totally)?
When can we be as nonchalant as men?
When can we master the skill of 'shutting' our ears as and when we want to?
When can we not worry about our facial hair growing and pores enlarging?
When can we play with our kids one moment and leave for a drink the next moment without worries?
When can we stop thinking when we can be like the men?
P/S: haha..ignorre me...i think im ranting too much here after the 2 conversations. I really wish to be a man in my next life!
Tired to the max!
It's been a crazy  3 weeks i tell you. I'm 'zombified' (if there's even this word!), not having enough sleep and having to attend to the nitty-gritty stuffs in the day.
My maid's gone for almost a month, and i haven't been really doing much chores lately, just 'nuah-ing' at home in front of the TV or surfing the forum and FB.
I have tons of orders to catch up with and I'm slowly working on them. 2 things to share:
Bad news first, the maid i previously selected fresh from Philipines still hasn't got a confirmation from agency if she's gonna make it here. Good news is, i have chosen a transfer maid ( i sweared not to take a transfer maid!! Argh!) out of desperation.. I think it's fate (too early to consider it luck) that i found this agency. I was enquiring about another maid whom i did a search online and found her biodata. But she's been taken so this agent recommended this transfer maid to me.
I rushed down to Far East just to check it out and interview her. She's pleasant looking, much younger than my previous maid, neat and clean looking.
She should be able to come over  by next week (cross my fingers). I really need to get back to my routine and plenty of good nights sleep cos' I intend to let the new helper sleep in with Mischa! Woohoo! hopefully i'll be able to sneek out for some late night movies with hb soon!
Cheating husband or wife?
 Signs of a cheating partner?
Next time you are talking with a potential mate, listen up and you might just hear their cheating heart. Researchers have discovered that people can tell how likely a person of the opposite sex is to be a cheater, just by listening to their voice.
"This is really important given our evolutionary history," said researcher Jillian O'Connor, of McMaster's University in Canada. "Infidelity is incredibly costly, people risk raising children that aren't their own and losing resources." [Financially Dependent Men More Likely to Cheat]
The researchers quizzed about 120 male and female college students. They recorded either a male or female speaking vowel sounds and then made higher- and lower-pitch versions, which they played for participants.
They had the participants rate the attractiveness of each pair of voices, and then asked them how likely they thought it would be for that person to be a cheater. The ladies associated the lower-pitched male voices with cheating, while the guys associated the higher-pitched female voices with cheating. The males weren't able to tell if another man was likely to stray based on his voice, though.
Voice pitch is related to sex hormone levels, the researchers said. The more testosterone a male has, the lower his voice, and the more estrogen a woman has, the higher her voice. Additional sex hormones have also been linked with an increase likelihood of carrying on cheating relationships and having more sexual partners.
"There are definitely social, cultural and psychological factors as well," O'Connor told LiveScience. "But there is an association between infidelity risk and hormone levels in men and women."
Women are attracted to men with high testosterone levels, possibly because it weakens the immune system. If a man can have high levels of testosterone and still be healthy and fit, he must have a good immune system, the thinking goes. High testosterone levels are also correlated with dominant behavior and high social status within groups, both good qualities in a mate.
It's likely these voice-reading abilities evolved to detect infidelity because it's costly (in terms of relationship investment and the cost of potential offspring) to be dating someone who is likely to cheat.
"It allows us to choose a mate that is likely to stick around and have children, and not do so with other people," O'Connor said.
The team is currently working to determine if there is a relationship between voice pitch and actual behavior in real people, to determine if men who naturally have low voices are more sexually promiscuous and more likely to cheat than those with higher-pitched voices.
Oh really? How true is that? Sounds like totally crap to me.
The Adjustment Bureau and Emily Blunt
I like this movie. It just sets me thinking about life. Though this movie didn't get as much raves as the much-raved about 'Inception'  , but good enough for my enjoyment and most importantly not confusing.
I love the twist of fate between the 2 lovers and most importantly, I just love staring at Emily Blunt int he movies. Her svelte and toned body, her accent and her charisma.
Real life doll!
Read this article from Yahoo! news this morning about this girl from China who is famous in Korea now becos of her real life doll face and body. She looks just like a character who just walked out of some  Japanese Anime stories. Pretty no doubt, but its really really hard to believe if she was really born like this or her photos were edited or she indeed when through plastic surgeries.
You know the lead from the famous Final Fantasy game? She looks just like that!
This photo taken together with her friend...frankly speaking, looks abit scary to me. Her friend look so much more natural.
Lousy customer service
  I need to rant! Just encountered horrible service and phone etiquette from the staffs at Best Denki (s) . Prural cos i called a few branches and i get the same kind of treatment from the staffs there...i guess it really shows the services of Best Denki, at least over the phone.
I have been doing a sort of spring cleaning of my closet and throwing out or selling things either I do not see myself using anymore I have repeated versions of them..remember I'm a shopping queen?
So I have given up on baking (i reckon it's cheaper and nicer to buy cakes/ pastries from bakeries) thus selling away my trusty KENWOOD mixer. And hair straightener that I realised I have 3 different versions of!
And so i called up Best Denki to check on the price of those items so that I can price my items for sale at a reasonable rate cos i have totally forgotten how much I paid for them.
It's just a simple request to speak to the sales rep, or just to get someone to check the prices for me. But i my call was being transferred to a 2nd party, then to the 3rd. And each time I had to repeat what my purpose was as the person who transferred the call simply just put me on hold and didn't help to convey the message. The last straw came when the 4th person who picked up the phone asked me what I was requesting for. this time I literally screamed at her. Just too bad for her, but i was really frustrated with the previous SAs who picked up my call and I had to repeat my request over and over again.
Am I expecting too much from these SAs? I feel that the person who answers the call is as equally important as those front liners. And it speaks alot of your corporate image and your brand. In terms of services and conversational etiquette, I really think that Singapore is losing behind by a big chunk compared to many countries.
another experience I had was in the Chanel boutique just recently. I was with a friend looking at earrings and there wasn't anyone available cos the boutique was packed like Chanel was having a sale! Nope, there wasn't a sale going on.
And so we managed to get hold of a SA who was almost done with a customer and we told her that we would like to get some earrings. So she said that she will attend to us in a minute while she disappeared into the store for god knows what reasons.
After a good 5min, we were still waiting for her at the counter waiting for her 'grand appearance'. As the earrings counter was hidden behind a full height shelf, we had to walk out to actually see her. And to my dismay, she was attending to a group of China tourist looking at bags! Me and my friends were furious and complained to another SA that her colleague was supposed to be attending to us first!
Fuming mad, we went out of the boutique and sweared never to buy from this SA ever with such poor customer service. Next time when I go into the boutique, I MUST check out her name and post it here or in the forum!
Mischa sang a birthday song to me on this special day. Okay, I did initiate it, but she was so good at it and even took her favourite cake toy as a prop.
She is really my sweetie....I hope my next birthday she will be the one who initiate it :P
Then it's off to school for Mischa at 9am. Continue cutting and sewing.... I reckon I will be doing this till the end of the month.
Oh a customer's coming to pick up her dress on the 1st of Feb. My birthday is just the corner. Maybe I won't even be having a celebration at all. Hiaz....
Mummy & Son
Yesterday I brought Mischa for the replacement class at Seimpi and was totally appalled by a behaviour of a boy who was hyperactive and utterly rude.
He belongs to the Sunday class wherea Mischa's in the Sat class. So that was the 1st time I have seen him and the rest of his classmates.
This boy was barely 3yr old and he went around hitting his classmates and their mothers - yours truly included! Mischa and I had our fair share of abuse froom him too!
I was mad, not totally at him though. I was just disappointed that his mother DID NOT do anything to stop him. She simply called out his name after each hitting attempt and pull him back gently. Sometimes without even a simple 'sorry' from her.
He pounded on my back then went towards another mother next. He screamed and shouted at teacher Fiona when she collected the music instruments back from him.
Many a times poor teacher Fiona had to stop him and raised her voice at him while his mother looked on with a blackened face.
The last straw came when he attempted to hit Mischa but missed! Thank goodness! But my girl was petrified! So teacher Fiona shouted at him to leave the class. His mother kind of got the hint , got up , picked up her bag and pulled her son out of the class.
It was then peace on earth for the rest of us :)
According to teacher Fiona, he had been behaving like this since he joined in October last year and his mother simply just sat there without feeling a wee bit embarassed by her ill discipline.
I guess the boy is just not ready for such classes and the mother really ought to do something about it.
                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

Today I had a little chat with Favian. He managed to finish his lunch pretty fast today, otherwise we will usually be rushing for him to finish lunch, pack his bag, shower and send him off to the school bus. So it was a really good chat.
We cuddled in bed and we chatted abit about his school and friends. I just wanted him to know that I still do care for him though I am sometimes harsh and strict with him.
I told him that he is still my no.1 baby even though I spend more time with Mischa and usually leave the teaching (schoolwork) to hubby.
He told me there is a boy who bullies him in class. And I told him how to protect himself from now on.
Favian has really grown up so much. Time flies and I still can remember those days when he was a baby.
I think its always good to spend some time with the kids and really have a chat to know more about what they have been thinking. I have not really tried doing this with Mischa, let's see how it will turn out :P
